Tomb Raider sequel confirmed! Heading to next-gen consoles!

It has been confirmed today that a sequel to this year's "Tomb Raider" will be hitting next-gen consoles!

Cheif Executive of Square Enix Phil Rogers had this to say:

"Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year's E3, and Thief coming in 2014," said Rogers. "I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel - something you may have heard about recently!"

This is good news as for me, Tomb Raider was fantastic and let's admit, the ending kind of left it open for a sequel.

What are your thoughts?

Based on the well received reviews from the last one, i'm not surprised with this announcement. Good news though.

I have been an avid fan of the Tomb Raider series for quite some time now, ever since I really got into the anniversary edition on the PS2. Since then, I have delved into most of the renditions that have come out over the years, including Underworld which I also thought was absolutely fantastic. To be honest, it does not come as much of a surprise to me since I have noticed the franchise's standing with Sony. It is popular and it sells, so I do not think we will be seeing it disappear anytime soon or in the perceivable future. All in all, I really look forward to it, thanks for the share!

There were 3 Tomb Raiders on the PS 1. There were a couple more on the PS 2 and the PS 3. Some were good, some were great, and some were bad. So it also doesn't surprise me that there would be another game on the PS 4. It would have surprised me more if they announced that there would no longer be a Tomb Raider game. Lol.

Yeah, I was very excited to hear the news and can't wait to see what Crystal Dynamics does next with the series. The recently released reboot was definitely one of my favorite games from this gen so I'm eager experience the sequel, especially since it will be released on next gen consoles. I definitely want to see more of a mythical element in the sequel that's for sure.

I think that the recent game was a relative success, and it was especially well optimised for the PC. I think that this is a franchise that has been on and off for a while and now is the time that it can shine again, the game in this franchise were quite well spread out so we aren't overloaded with the same games all the time. I look forward to seeing the next game but I do hope that they don't fall into the annual release mania and they take as long as they need to make a good quality game and not a quick cash grab.

This was almost common sense. From the realization that a sequel would be made to the fact that it would be on the next set of home systems. Hopefully, they'll be more realistic about the sales numbers. Because they were complaining about the game "only selling 4 million". So companies are struggling to sell even half that, yet they're complaining lol.

I think it's great. This recent version was alright and I enjoyed it very much. I just wish they didn't have to rely so much on violence and gore as an identity or to provide shock value, though. I think the gameplay is good enough to make it memorable that it's not really that necessary to be edgy just for the sake of it.

Hell yeah baby! So, they finally were able to break even after all, eh? I enjoyed this vulnerable and feminine yet super-strong Lara and want to know what will happen in her next adventure. But the state of flux Square Enix is in makes me wonder if it would ever see the light of the day.

I guess...
Maybe i had my nostalgia googles too tight, but am i the only one who didn't enjoyed the new tomb raider as much as the old ones? This one is just too much like uncharted, which is not bad but we already had that, i don't need a clone with a powerful woman that takes no help from a man. I just wish we had the old ones with the creepy atmosphere and complete exploration.

Almost identical to Uncharted, but not as humour-filled.

Exciting but not a surprise. Tomb Raider was a pretty ambitious title and it succeeded in many ways. I'm looking forward to this especially on my crisp new console. I just hope they don't milk the title like Assassin's Creed or at least don't make it an annual project.

I'm surprised they are doing a squeal since the first one didn't meet their sale expectations. But good to hear this, the game is excellent.

Mmm... I guess, but I'm just not feeling the reboot. It isn't so much nostalgia as it trying to adjust to a completely different experience that happens to have Tomb Raider written on top if it. It's like that Devil May Cry reboot - going from silver haired bishie with bad jokes to emo-brat is kind of a jump. In this case it was going from boxum ninja/explorer/historian with guns to traumatized tomboy and stuff. Just wasn't feeling it really. Ah, well.

Yep, how could it meet such unrealistic expectations, specially considering that it was a reboot? They wanted to sell like Assassins Creed which was not possible. But if I remember correctly, they conceded later on that the game has broke-even. They wouldn't have gone for the sequel had they not derived any profits from the Tomb Raider game.It would be interesting to see if they also jump on the open-world ship like Ubisoft and EA is doing with most of their games. Let's face it, as outlandish as it may sound, I think open-world take on Tomb Raider franchise would be awesome.

It's a different take to the Tomb Raider series. The gameplay is like Uncharted but it's a lot darker. Those not accustomed to dark and moody and violent games would opt to stay away. But I think they would stick with this same formula in the next game. I think they hit the sweet spot with the recent remake of TR and they should continue with it.

I played the newest tomb raider and didn't really rate it if i'm honest although maybe i could try it again but it seems its not for me, the way it works and how its like combat engine is.

I'm actually really excited for this because I loved the reboot. It was everything I wanted in a Tomb Raider game and wasn't trivialised by juvenile camera pans and other BS like the other games in the series had. Also, it's another way to make use of that hair physics, rawrr.
