TV service on the PS4?

One thing that the PS4 doesn't have that the Xbox One has is access to watching TV shows. But, this may not be true anymore. Sony has struck out a deal with Viacom, and this may hint that internet TV service will be featured on the PS4. Not only that, but it is rumored that the PS4 will be broadcasting from live TV feeds instead of a streaming it like Netflix or Hulu. It looks as though this will only be available to PS subscribers unfortunately, but hey, we get to watch Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, and a bunch more. As of right now, it is all speculations, but why else would Sony have a deal with Viacom?

In a deal that may signal the start of a new era of competition for entrenched cable and satellite providers, Viacom has tentatively agreed to let its popular cable channels — like Nickelodeon and MTV — be carried by an Internet TV service that Sony is creating.

Meh personally I don't care for TV services on any console. I actually laughed when the XBox One made their whole console revolved around TV. I mean it's a gaming console; if I want to watch TV I'll turn on my TV.

Seriously, as long as we have Netflix and Hulu on the consoles, who cares about the TV services? We already have TV on our TVs!

But still I guess it provides another option to the people and more functionality to the console. Wouldn't really effect my choice of console though.

Cool but not groundbreaking. If you really want to watch TV over the internet then invest something like a cheap android box or the google TV, they aren't very expensive and you can easily stream for free from freeview if you are in the UK or just youtube or on demand stuff. There's really a lot of cheap and very portable options out there, so I wouldn't really care if my PS4 couldn't double as a TV box.

I mean, if you are already using the screen for the console, i think you might as well just use the damn thing as a television too, you don't need the console in the middle of that.

While it may not be of use to some people, I'm sure this is just Sony making sure to have all of their media based options covered. I already have a few streaming services but I will make sure to check it out when it is launched to see what it is all about. I'm hoping it at least has a variety of content to watch and not something that is monolithic.

This would all be so much more interesting if they, in this so-called globalized world, would stop restricting these services to certain regions only... I mean they can easily cater advertising and such just towards your respective region but why is it always so hard for things like Netflix, Hulu, Crunchyroll (well that exists here, we can pay the same money as US people but almost all shows are restricted US only. Well, thanks) and these internet TV channels to open up their content to the world? It makes no sense to me, really.
If that wasn't the case, having those channels on a console would be much more tempting as a reason for purchase. Since we DON'T get them using just our regular TVs. So people outside of the US would ACTUALLY benefit from services like this.

I am buying the PS4 for the mere fact that I can play awesome games on a beast of a console. Any accessories like TV would be pretty cool but if it didn't work out I wouldn't worry about it

No, not again. I have got a feeling that it will be available a ll across the globe. Sony is a Japanese company. I don't think that they are going to ignore all the other regions.

I hope it will have a channel that would show a lot of Japanese anime like Animax. It's laughable though. Xbox was copying PS 4 before and now PS 4 is copying the Xbone? It's good though, that each one is always trying to one-up the other. I wonder what else is next...

Internet TV is inevitable. I'm not sure we'll ever see an Ala Cart style like I would like, but I can say that the idea of satellite or a cable box will be something that our grand children will make fun of when they see them at thrift shops. Technology will move on and as older people either learn how to use it or unfortunately pass away, the newer markets are going to demand different services. This is how the invisible hand works. Mechanical and unyielding.

The television service for the PS4 as I stated before is going to be a great addition for the PlayStation. I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the PlayStation 4, because for me it will be worth every penny.

Maybe it's just me but I don't really care about the TV services on the new consoles, whatever they are. I might care more if I was the one playing the satellite bill, though. I use Netflix anyway so I figure that it rounds out with or without some special TV streaming device. I do appreciate being able to stream Netflix without a subscription, though.

It doesn't bother me much. I don't see it as an overly useful feature as I don't watch much TV at all. On the other hand I don't see why it's such a problem either, you can either use the feature or not!

Sounds pretty neat. I think it's kind of amazing how these consoles are evolving just to stay relevant, and I'm excited to see the innovations it brings. Hopefully they still focus on the games, of course. As for the TV feature, I personally would be more interested in seeing direct American television rather than streaming sites like Netflix.
