Unnecessary Sequels

What were some sequels you felt were either wholly unwanted, or felt like a cheap cash-grab? I'm not talking about bad/poorly-made sequels, I'm talking about sequels to a games that either didn't need them, or didn't need the sequel they actually got.

For example, two titles that come to mind for me are Bioshock 2 and Modern Warfare 3. Both weren't bad game or badly made, per se, but both felt so hollow and forgettable that they did little to nothing to improve, continue, or relate to the quality of the original game. They could have been DLC expansions and no one would have thought anything of it. Bioshock didn't warrant a sequel, and it certainly didn't need the one they got. What other sequels made you think ,"Nope, try again developer"?

I felt that way about the second Dead Rising game. Not everything needs to be a franchise! Now they're making a third, which seems even more unnecessary.

Definitely Modern Warfare 3 as well. But I could say that for all the COD games after Call of Duty 4.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2014 and all other golf game sequels. I'm not a fan of golf games and I never will be. I can't understand why they keep on releasing sequel upon sequel of golf games. Boxing games don't even get an update every year. Is there a large niche market of golf video games?

Dragon Age 2. It's not that it was unnecessary, it was actually quite welcome after Origins left off on a nice cliffhanger , but Dragon Age was terrible in all regards. It was an awful sequel and an even worse game. Admittedly the graphics were improved a lot, but the gameplay was dumbed down and the storyline just went totally off the rails, it wasn't at all relevant to the first game and it was such a disappointment that I would have rather seen Dragon Age Origins ended on a very strong note.

I would actually say I quite enjoyed the second Dead Rising but that's because I never got the chance to play the original, also from what I've played of the Sam and Max Series seems really fun.

While these games are not technically sequels most of the sports game seem useless, I mean a new game every year is too often when you've been going for more than ten years. I would have to say the best way to do it would maybe be a game every two-three years at least. In the same vein as sports games is Pokemon, I mean I enjoy the games but I think they make their double games a little too frequently.

I had heard that, and didn't buy DA2 for that reason. It's sad, too, because Dragon Age remains one of my very favorite games. It's sad to think that Bioware would mess up so badly. Then again, they were pouring a lot of resources into SWTOR at the time, and clearly THAT went badly as well, so they're not making particularly great choices late.

I believe COD desperately falls into this category aside from COD4 as well as the titles before MW2. It is nice to have sequels, but when it is precisely the same thing over and over again with very minor changes, maybe a few fixes of bugs or cheap tactics that annoy you here and there, it is really milking the popularity. Unfortunately, people who do not know any better will continue to purchase each release regardless of how blatantly identical it is to its predecessor. This type of game is timeless, though, and you can bet that it will be reinvented to suit the new generation.

The only innovation I see nowadays are in the horror, RPG, and to some extent the action-adventure genres. There may be a few more I am missing, but surely if you have not been under a rock as a gamer all your life, you get where I am coming from.

Another franchise I thought had an unnecessary sequel is Assassin's Creed. They could have done entirely without Revelations, forget ACIII. I know a lot of people bash ACIII, but it served to mark the end of Desmond's story to bring along something new, which I think the franchise has been needing for a while now.

I'd actually like CoD to go and do one more ww2 shooter. It got stale for a while, but no one does ww2 anymore.

Yeah I agree that the Call of Duty series has basically become an annual cash grab. Everybody now has come to expect a new Call of Duty game to be released every November like an Rihanna album. What makes it worse is that besides different locations and different guns, the games are usually exactly the same. Since Call of Duty: Ghosts will be on next gen systems, there is a chance it will be different but I'm not gonna hold my breath on it.
