What are the odds of the PS4 keeping its momentum?

Yup, the recent news about 10 million units sold is pretty impressive. That's sold, not shipped. In just less than a year, the PS4 has already reached this number. The thing I'm thinking right now is, will the PS4 be able to keep this momentum going? 2014 still has a few months to go, do you think that Sony will be able to carry the success to 2015?

I think they will carry it into the Holiday season, but after that it will all depend on the games. Games like Destiny are going to be big for PS, but since it is on Xbox too, its not a system seller.

PS definitely needs some top tier exclusives to keep the momentum.

I think the last generation lasted so long, people were hungry for the new one, and adopted early. I think for them to keep up the momentum, they're actually going to need to release some games that make people want to buy the PS4 as something other than an investment in the future.

We can't underestimate the power of 1st year sales. If your gaming friends already have a system it will have influence on which one to buy. A killer exclusive would be great, but even without it I think the PS4 will keep it's momentum going.

MY guess would be it carries on for another 3-6 months give or take. At this point there is around 10 million people who are able to get PS+. Soon they wont have to worry about console sales.

Considering it has 10+ million sales with literally no good AAA games out it's astounding. It will only pick up speed in the next year when all the big games come out. May take a hit when Halo MCC comes out this year but that will only be a brief glitch in the system so to speak.

It'll get better IMO. A lot of my friends are still playing on their 360/PS3 because they don't have the money or they don't want to yet. Upcoming AAA games will also bring more consumers in. I really don't see anything that could stop this momentum within the next year.

I also think that there's a big chance since the PS4 has sold so many. Like I said, 10 million is a lot in the first year and the install base will make companies want to go to the PS4 for releasing games. When that happens, a lot of great games will be on the PS4 and people will want to buy the console. I think it's a cycle that goes on and on.

I can't see the current sales starting to dip anywhere this side of Christmas. I suspect, if anything, we'll start seeing a bit of a rise in the run-up as no doubt there will be many people receiving them as presents. After there, who knows…

All I'll say is that I suspect sales may start to dip slightly when we get into next year if there's still so few 'big' titles out there. However if they time launches of such games right, I suspect it's current level success will continue on for at least another six to twelve months.

I beginning to feel ready to change and to upgrade from my PS3 – but not at the current price. It's still above the level I'm willing to pay. I'll admit I'm sort-of hoping for a bit of a dip in sales after the end of the year, as then some decent deals may start to surface…! As I've said before, I'm going to start seriously looking around from the end of next month (got a holiday to pay for between now and then) but I suspect I won't actually be purchasing one until after Christmas, as I'll be interested to see if any appear in Boxing Day/January Sales.

I don't think the competition's offering is much of an alternative as Nintendo are aiming for a much younger market and MS target the American TV viewer whereas Sony hit the sweet spot in terms of gaming, power, price and consistent marketing (and loads of it LOL).

With better cross plat games on the PS4 and more exclusives I don't see the gap closing soon.

I think that the PS 4 will keep its momentum going into this year's holidays. During this past year, Sony's sales have caused Microsoft to change its SKU and offer an XB One without Kinect which is foundation breaking since MS wanted their XB to have that extra piece of equipment during its life cycle. It was suppose to be such a big feature that their marketing surrounded that Kincect functionality. Meanwhile, Sony hasn't changed their strategy. They are offering their hardware without making any ground breaking changes and people are still buying it.

XB One shot to become a media device for the family and left its gaming roots untended. Now they have to bring their customer base back around and dedicate themselves to providing something better than Sony in any of the hard core arenas.

If they plan on good exclusive games, the PS4 could keep its momentum for a good time. Sony does that good enough and I think the PS4 will have momentum for a long time. 10 million sold units is a great number and hence we can say that the PS4 will be at a great standing.

I say they'll keep this momentum going for a while. This is just like the ps2. They had a hell of a good momentum from the start despite Xbox being superior technology wise and kept it up until they discontinued it last year. Even non gamers had a ps2. Not saying ps4 will be the best selling console of all time but I think it will be close. It seems to me Sony took a step back and remembered their roots and are kicking ass and taking names.

EDIT: I read a couple days ago ps4 sold something like an eight of what ps3 sold in its life time. Hasn't even been out a year. That's very impressive.
