When playing games that are old but not really

I feel like whenever I play a game that has been released like 2-4 years ago it seems to wear down on me, like "How can I have missed this game before?". I feel like I'm that one kid that got left by the school bus on a Monday morning, I feel like I missed out a lot.

I've got to the age where I'm rarely amongst the first to anything, now. I can't be bothered 'keeping up' any more and the contents of my wallet means considerably more to me now than it did 12-15 years ago. As a result, I'll happily sit back and watch others spend the 'big bucks' being early and I’ll follow on with a purchase when whatever new game it is I'm looking at is more reasonably priced. I've saved a small fortune in recent years.

There's very few games out there now that I'll still buy on or very close to launch day. About the only titles that I make a point of purchasing early, simply for old times sake as I've done them all, are Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Just about anything else I'll happily wait for all the hype to die down and the prices to practically half.

Take a look at me if you want 'behind the times' examples. I've yet to get a PS4 despite it being out for almost a year and, as multiplayers have no interest to me as I have no real 'friends' as such, I've also yet to experience any sort of online gaming (barring watching others via the likes of YouTube) which has been becoming increasingly popular for several years. So when people talk about PSN and PS+ or whatever, it's practically a foreign language to me. I know 'of' them but that's about it. I also still own my PS2...

I'm the same way but alot of that is because I didn't really get a last/current gen console until pretty late into the party. I still find games that I missed on console/pc all the time. I know all those feelings too well.

The ironic thing is that these new games come out and everyone rushes to buy them rather than wait and see what's coming out after it, or if there's another game that's basically the same. It's not as if you need to rush and buy a game as soon as it's released, the likelihood of the game being as good as it could be is doubtful considering if it's on Xbox, PS and PC, the PC version may look better than the Xbox or PS version. I'm way behind gaming-wise, I haven't even owned a PS3 yet. Mind you, I still use an Analog TV because flat screen's are just too expensive. I agree with Haymansafc though, games like Tomb Raider/Resident Evil/Silent Hill - there's a certain quality which you know you're going to get so buying them early doesn't hurt but then there are games which get all the hype and turn out to be complete garbage.
I think it's better waiting a year or two before you actually purchase a game, you could easily play it via a friend's house etc and see whether you even like it. I liked the old PS1 demo discs you could win through competitions/purchase because you could try all these different games without needing to buy them and decide whether it's actually worth buying them before you wasted a lot of money. Considering the expense of games now, it is better to wait. Second hand copies although sometimes problematic are going to be a hell of a lot cheaper than buying them brand new.

I rarely play something that isn't a new release, there are just too many new games to keep up with. If I have an extra few days I'll go back to something older that I missed, but it is rare.

Part of me wishes the whole industry would collapse and there would be no new games for like 2 or 3 years. Even that might not be enough time for my backlog..

Yeah I think there's just too many games each year, they give us almost no breathing room. I sometimes just wait for a Trilogy or a Collections edition of a game franchise.

With so many great games coming this year and the very net year, you are bound to miss out on some good games. It's pretty natural to miss out on some games. You are not going to be able to play them all.

Me, I love digging up old games. Just the other day I finished playing Max Payne 2 and I really liked it. Sometimes those old games can be a lot better than current games. So, for me, being left behind by the school bus is a blessing.

Again, I find YouTube is ideal for those who can't keep right up to date or have no access to certain games. There are a few quality Walkthrough people on there who I do watch. All my PS4 material to date has come from YouTube and from that, I've already decided there's a few games not worth bothering with (over-hyped) and at least one which I do fancy getting as/when the prices are right. If not, oh well… I've already seen it anyway… This is one reason why I've not rushed into buying a PS4 because as things stand and thanks to YouTube, I don't feel as though I'm really missing out on all that much. I do admit that my patience on waiting for prices to fall is starting to wear a little thin, now. I suspect I'll be 'biting the bullet' and picking one up sometime after Christmas.

Generally speaking, I do prefer older games to newer ones for the fact that they seem to focus more on the aspects that I like – actual gameplay and plot. Many of today's games seem to almost solely focus on fancy graphics and leave the actual game itself feeling pretty 'empty', with few objectives or any true free-roam mode. It's one reason why I know I've watched more games than I've physically owned and played myself in recent years. I find I can play older games over and over again. I can only think of a small handful of anything made over the last five years or so that I've actually gone back to, even once, after completing it.

A good point. I have a Samsung flatscreen TV that I presume is HD ready. It has an HD button and a '1080' setting… I guess that's it…? It must be a good five years old, now. That's my only concern, The TV I had before that was an old Beko that dated back to at least the mid nineties, so as you can tell, I don't do much updating for two reasons. Firstly, the expense. Domestic bills and running the car swallows up half my income before we even get to food/drink. Secondly, I'm the first to admit that I'm a slow learner when it comes to new electrical technology. Most of it goes over my head where with many people, something seems to just click in their brains and just 'know' what to do instantly. I'm not like that. I need to be physically shown or least have proper step by step instructions.

If you're just patient you can buy any game a couple months later and the price will be dramatically different.

I stopped worrying a longtime ago about having video games early any more these days it just seems like I am getting games that are a bit old but that I never had the opportunity to get and really to me it does not feel so bad at all. I a just happy that now I am able to get those games.
