Who's got a callous in his thumb?

I love to play fighting games. Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, you name it man. I can rain down hadoukens or Mach punches or freeze attacks all day long at the expense of my thumb. Yes, I've got a callous on my thumb and that's because of fighting games. I think it started when I played X-men vs Street Fighter on the PS1. I didn't want to purchase an arcade pad so this is what I got.

The biggest offender for callouses would have to go to Virtua Athlete 2k on the dreamcast. it was one of those games where you had to alternate A and B to run faster for example. Everyones thumbs were so sore we started putting bandaids or cloth over our hand while playing. We were about 18-19 at this time, way past the dreamcasts life cycle. We had the new consoles but we were addicted to this game and highly competitive.

Anyway, i wake up one morning and come out into the living room to see my friend patrick hunched over on the couch, hand under his shirt moving back and forth furiously lmao. At first i was like "whoa whoa whoa" until i realized there was a controller cable coming from his general vicinity too. I'll never forget that

I rarely get those. I play for long periods of time sometimes, but I press the buttons gently. I think I learned this behavior most in fighting games, it's a lot better to gently press the buttons when making moves and combos because it provides for a smoother motion when doing half circles with the D-pad and also it makes moving on to the next button much quicker. I never understood why people mashed their buttons in fighting games, I suppose it's easy to get carried away, but it doesn't make the punches any harder. :D

Haha. I'm guilty of this. But I don't think that people press the buttons much harder because they want strikes to be stronger. They just get carried away by the action happening on screen.

I don't really play fighting games (I'm considering buying Injustice: Gods Among Us) but I have a lot of respect for people who are good at fighting games. There is something impressive about people that don't just randomly hit buttons.

When I used to play these games, especially fighting games, I suffered from the occasional callous. And it's not just fighting games, but also hack-and-slash games such as Dynasty Warriors where you constantly mash the buttons in order to max out the combos. Today, I gave up playing these games, as I play mostly on the emulators. The only time I may suffer from the callous is when playing the PSP, but I stopped playing even that console too.
