Your Most Loved & Hated Game Genres

I've never been partial to the FPS genre, I see them all as the same thing just with different weapons. I'm sure I'm wrong though, and there are probably a lot of subtle differences that make each game unique, but I just can't see it and it even makes me wonder why we have so much of it. I do like to play them once in a while, and I can still certainly appreciate them for what they are, but like I said, I'll never understand why this genre is this popular.

As for my favorite genres, I'd say RPG and fighting are my favorites, but I don't like the sandbox type or RPG too much, I prefer linear ones a lot more.

Do you have any of the other popular genres that don't appeal to you, or do you pretty much like them all?

This is one reason why I love the Playstation 1 so much. It had a game for almost every gaming genre in the market. You could never run out of games to play.

To answer your question, my favorite genre would have to be Role-Playing games. I loved to play as a hero out to save the world because it made me feel like I was special. In addition to that, I love going to towns and hanging out with the villagers.

On the the other hand, I never liked the turned-based strategy games. Honestly, I found those games to be very boring. I hope this does not offend any fans of the genre.

I really like every type of genre, but the games in the specific genre may be boring for me.

Personally, I don't like racing games. I feel like the game is straightforward, and no variety in the genre at all. All you do is race from one place to another, don't get me wrong though, I do love mario cart, since there is some variety, I just don't like racing games where all you do is hold down a button to gain speed and race to the end.

As for the genres I like, I really like MMORPGS. I started off playing an MMORPG, and am still playing and looking for some new ones today. I really like the grind aspect although it can be quite repetitive.

For me it's more of a game specific question than a genre based one. But even then, i have some problems with playing FPS in consoles, specially the PS1, which were clunky at the time. As for the best, i would have to say RPG's, mostly because the PS1 was the console of choice for them.

I loathed FPS games on the PS 1. They simply looked horrible and caused me motion sickness. I also hated car combat games like Twisted Metal. I liked their back story but I did not really like the gameplay. I hate chasing down cars and trying to fire at them. I find it hard to do.

For the PS2, I just hated the car combat games and its match 3 games. I find no point of playing match 3 games on the PS2. I loved everything else on both consoles.

I love RPG games too. I've mentioned many times that I loved, loved the Suikoden games and also Final Fantasy.

I really don't like fighting games, for the sole reason that I cant' seem to complete combos. I'm always the loser when playing Marvel or Capcom games. I guess it's because my hand and eye coordination is really lacking.

I agree completely, they had so much variety back then. I wonder what happened? I remember it's probably one of the last consoles to feature (true) side scrollers, and they will be missed. ;_;7

As for turn based games, I have a love hate relationship with those. If the game is cutesy (which in turn based games, they mostly are) , I won't touch it. But if I get a hold of one and really get into it then it's hard for me to put it down until the end.

Turn Based Role Playing Games, absolutely. My entire childhood is basically me plastered with a ps1 controller, playing some old-school JRPG.

Least favorite: Sports. Not a bad genre per-say but it's just not for me.

I really love Sandbox style games such as Grand Theft auto, or simulation games. I would put this along with horror games at my number one spot. I am going to say that FPS games are my least favourite, most of them just don't appeal to me with a few exceptions, CoD being one of them.

I enjoyed RPG games such as:

Tales of Destiny: It has a classic arcade style fighting with RPG elements.
Final Fantasy 6,7,8,9,10 - I loved all 5 series. I personally think FF10 was the last great series.
Winning Eleven - The best soccer game!
Metal Slug - This game reminds me of Contra but better graphics!
Marvel vs Capcom - This was the first fighting game I played.

Games I didn't enjoy:

I didn't like the racing games as much, but that was because I wasn't good at it. :D

Sandbox and RPG's are my favourites. Followed by action/adventures (God of War, Prince of Persia) with the occasional racing games. Lastly I would say FPS because they are just all the same more or less these days and JRPG's. Only because they confuse me, I would like to learn more about them but don't seem to have the patience.

My Lord, Tales of Destiny and the Tales series as a whole has one of the best gameplay when it comes to fighting! The fighting style made the random combats less tedious and boring. I love mixing skills and trying to combo my attacks. In addition to that, I loved the game's storyline. It was very interesting due to the fact that it also had talking swords.

Awesome game. I miss playing that.

I don't know if it's technically a genre, but I absolutely hate stealth games. I don't think they're bad, but I'm just so bad at them that it sucks all the enjoyment out of them. On the other hand, when a game does it right (i.e. Arkham Asylum), it can be extremely enjoyable. My favorite game genre is generally RPGs, but it really depends on the specific type. I do enjoy games that require a lot of leveling, because then I know that if I can't beat a specific part of the game that I can spend some time preparing and try it again. I also love the customization aspect--there's nothing more satisfying than entering a new town, heading straight to the shop, and buying your character(s) all the new equipment you can afford.
