I don't think the PS4 was rushed as such. The technology is in place, but it really should have had a better selection of games from day one. However I must admit that as someone who still hasn't upgraded to one, the fact that there's already been system updates so early on in it's life is mildly concerning.
Like Dean, I don't physically have space for both a PS3 and a PS4 consoles to run side by side. I don't have enough plug sockets either as I'm already on two plug socket extensions as it is. When I do finally make the plunge, it'll be a case of disconnecting the PS3 and using the same socket for the PS4.
The only other feature I have used on my PS3 other than slotting in a game is the ability to play DVD's. Whilst it plays them well enough, I find the volume is very low compared with sticking it into my DVD player itself. I find myself two thirds of the way up the television’s volume, whereas I'm rarely any more than just under half way with the proper DVD player. I've never figured out why. As a result, I probably use it for DVD's only a handful of times in any given year. With regards to Blu-ray, I can only recall using one sole disc! As a result 95% of it’s life it's simply been used as a 'plug in and play' console – which is what I feel all consoles should be first and foremost. I'm not really interested in the needlessly over complicated garnish of the 'next gen'. Just what new games, single players, I can get for it.
Personally, I'm in no rush to upgrade to the PS4 as of yet. I've already stated most of the reasons for doing so. To me, it's not worth it's £350-odd price tag and certainly not for what I want it for. Heck, I'll still be grimacing if end up paying over the £250 mark (I will have at least two substantial Amazon vouchers in my possession when the time comes). It's going to be at least another month before I start considering and even then, I really can still see me holding back a while longer… Make no mistake my PS3 is in it's 'Twilight days' now, but I'm just not quite ready to make the upgrade yet. I want to see how things pan out with the new console over the next few months once the UK finally gets a decent shipment of them. Until then, I'm happy just ticking over tying up the few loose ends that are left on my PS3 gaming career - and watching YouTube videos of early PS4/XBox One games (more money saved...!).
The time to strike is when there's plenty on the market, teething troubles have been ironed out and there's a better selection of games. I doubt there's going to be any sort of price cut any time soon but I do expect some attractive and better value bundles to start appearing later on this year. I made a mistake in getting a PS3 very early on and it's a mistake I'm determined not to be make again. My patience and market research skills have developed leaps and bounds since the PS3 was launched!
Speaking of pre-ordering things, I don't recall doing anything like this since High School – and I left there coming up for 13 years ago this summer. Nine times out of ten if I'd pre-ordered a game I went into the relevant shop and there were numerous copies on general sale anyway… Obviously, the market has changed a lot since then and now the common marketing practice is to only import/produce very limited numbers so they can milk the most out of the customers for as long as they dare before having to supply a reasonable amount. Something they could have done (and used to) from day one… If I've got to wait a few weeks or a few months for something then, quite frankly, so be it. It's not the end of the world! The contents of my wallet mean a heck of a lot more to me now than they did when I was a school leaver. Let the market flood and get what you want for a more acceptable price.
Also when it comes to games, take all the release dates with a pinch of salt. As someone who's been gaming since the very late eighties (about as far back as I can recall), just about everything that I've wanted has been pushed back. There's almost always some sort of delay due to a technical problem or similar. Especially those with November and December release dates. You can almost guarantee it'll be into the New Year before it's actually launched…
I went into a couple of retail stores over the weekend and they have a whole bunch of Xbone stuff but just a tiny little section for the PS4.
A very good point, there. Infact I can go a stage further than that. I've yet to actually see any PS4 game for sale in the shops anywhere around these parts. All that I can see are narrow displays for discounted PS3's and PS3 games. There does appear to be a heck of a delayed reaction/response in this respect. Even I'm surprised at how slow retailers have been in this respect.
