Activision Says Price Drops For PS4 Could Come Sooner

Activision: Xbox One, PS4 price drops could come sooner than current-gen

CEO Bobby Kotick says greater manufacturing efficiency means prices could come down faster compared to current-generation.

"They've made more investments in the back office than ever before. I think you've got lots of efficiency in manufacturing costs that could potentially drive hardware prices down sooner in the cycle," Kotick said about Microsoft and Sony. "There's no indication, from our perspective, that you're going to see anything other than a very successful next seven or eight years."

What do you guys think of this? I think it's great that they are finally getting more efficient at this, probably because gaming is slowly getting standardized, but at least (hopefully) products can cost less in the future, maybe? Certainly this is welcome news to those waiting for a price cut like me, but what do the early adopters think of it? Does it make you want to just wait instead?

I'm sure it will still take awhile for a real price drop. Sony still wants to make as much $$$ as possible. I'd say at least a solid year before the price changes.

Yeah, I see how manufacturing costs being cheaper could affect the prices. Yet Sony and Microsoft are still businesses. They will drop their prices when they see sales taking a plunge.

Im willing to wait a year for a good price drop. Definitely. Especially with the xbox one costing 100 more for what amounts to a stupid voice command camera

Well, this is definitely one more reason why I should wait rather than go and purchase a PS 4 outright. The PS 3 won't go out immediately. There would still be some games coming out for it until 2014 and that would be enough to keep me busy until the PS 4 will drop in price.

I think it's normal to believe that the console prices will drop quickly, but I do not think it is Sony's strategy. There was just Microsoft that I can see to do that.

The price of the PS4 is set for at least one year. Next to Christmas, or may expect to see a $ 350 to the price of the console.
I prefer to have my console now than wait much hoping for a price drop. The price is reasonable for the moment.

I think we agree, because it is still a next generation console.

I would hope for a price drop on the PS4 as soon as possible. I really don't mind spending the money now, but I would prefer the system drop first. Gaming is not a necessity in my life right now. Although I give it about a year to two, before the console actually drops a big amount.

This would have been my guess as well. I think slashing the prices at 6 months or even 8 would just be too unfair for the early adopters. Dropping the price after a year would still be considered earlier than on the PS3 though, right? How long did it take for the price of PS3 to drop anyway?

Well, that's good news but I also suspect that they're not going to lower prices until sales start to drop off enough that they want a good way to revitalize them. Lowering the price might be one of the best ways they ahve of doing that.

Since I pre-ordered the PS4 it doesn't really end up helping me, but even as an early adopter I don't mind if they end up lowering it pretty soon. That's the price of being an early adopter.

Well if it takes a year than be it but I would be really happy the fall starts coming quicker, there are some really cool titles getting released next year and I would lime my hands on one of those as soon as possible.

I could see them doing a price drop sooner rather than later. Maybe a bit of a sale around the holidays to really churn out the consoles. Remember Sony really needs more people to purchase the PS4 to make up for all the money that they lost with the PS3, so anything to drum up sales would work for them.

I'm definitely not expecting these initial launch prices to last too long, that would just be absurd.

But yeah, a price drop would be appreciated soon. Maybe they should aim for a Christmas price drop so parents can afford it for their kids. Maybe if they saw the PS4 was a lot cheaper than the Xbox One, then PS4 sales would go up and maybe even confirm the next generation as Sony's (if all the kids see that their friends own a PS4, then they will want it too).

Although what I'd really like to see is a drastic reduction in the price of games. I just don't see the current price of games as necessary when there is so much competition out there, it's almost like they don't want people to buy as many games as possible. I think the price of games is more important than the price of consoles, at least imo.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did do a Christmas price drop. It would make sense and would help move a lot more consoles. Heck even the Xbox One should consider a price drop if they really want to move consoles during peak holiday season shopping. I know I'm waiting for a price drop before I pick up my console.

You know what? Even if they dropped them down 15-20 bucks, those who normally wouldn't buy one due to the price would take advantage of it. The power of money saving. Save 1 dollar? HELL YES!
