Any heard of or use a VR Headset for their mobile phone?
You maybe heard of Google Cardboard, the cheapest way to get into this whole VR thing.
You can buy them for around $10 cause they are,well..made of cardboard.
Fixed lenses though so no focal adjustment.
If you are interest in all this first make sure your phone has at least a 1080P screen, forget 720P.
People say no need for some of the newer higher screen resolutions which they call quad HD,actually 2K so 1440x2560 pixels.
For normal phone screen viewing you'd be hard pressed to see much difference between 1080P and 2K on your phone but this is where these higher resolutions really shine and are suited best, mobile VR.
So an LG G3,G4 or Samsung Galaxy S6 for eg work great as they have 2K res.
Apart from google cardboard headset you can now buy quite a few different plastic versions of these.
If you get one I would recommend make sure it has IPD and focal length adjustment.
So you can move the lenses left/right and forward/backward to give you a clear picture.
So many have 'fixed' lensed that you cannot adjust,we all have diff eyes and vision so make sense to me that you need one with focal adjustment.
Getting one with no adjustment seems pointless to me as you are replying on the fact that your vision will suit.
Also be weary of those claiming a high FoV (field of view) as many are lower than google cardboard.
High FoV is great for VR games to give you better immersion but if you are interested in one for a movie viewer (movie viewer apps need to be downloaded from googleplay or itunes app store) then they are fine for this. Its like having a big screen TV in front of you and like I said, with the right headset and phone it can be done very well, you may be suprised by the result.
OK,I have bought a few up to now so here's what I have and what I think of these particular models.
Also keep in mind the internet has rebranded versions of them too so many looks the same, just diff branded.
-----------
My first ones, the Ritech.Or clone of.
As I said, this ones has fixed lenses so no good at all really.
-----------
My 2nd one,the Xiazhai.
Better, has adjustable lenses as they on a threads so screw in and out but you cant adjust while wearing, you need to take them off, adjust but by bit.
But you can get a clear picture and FoV (field of FoV) is reasonable.
Has some thin sponge padding but nose area isnt big and seems to press on my nose bridge a little.
Can be had for around $20-25 though so a decent start.
-----------
The VR Box (my 4th)
Actually good value.
FoV isnt huge either so great for movies.
Has cloth cushioning for paddding and lenses can be adjusted for IPD and focal length.
Works quite well but doesnt wrap around the face as much as others so light can get in a little from the sides,at least for me.
Can be had for around $35-40 if you look.
-----------
Baofeng Storm II (my 3rd)
This ones build quality is good and doent feel as cheap as some of the others.
FoV isnt huge but again, good for a movie viewer.
It has pleather cushioning and is comfortable.
Has IPD adjustment and focal length adjustment with a knob on the side.
But I did have a problem with this as the range of adjustment wasnt great and I couldnt get a clear picture.
Since then I have stuck a 50mm magnifiying lense on each side near the front where the phone goes in and now I can get a clear picture and screen size is also a little bigger.
Works good.
Cost around $50-70.
-------
There are others out there and some quite expensive, like the Homido for eg,around $150.
And Im sure you've heard of the Gear VR,made for the Samsung Note 4.
This is an affordable way to get in the whole VR thing and with the right headset, phone and apps/games etc it can work really well.
Remember graphics is only as good as your phone and OS but these are a good alternative until Oculous Rift and Project Morpheus come out anyway.
Im no expert on this but feel free to ask any question and Ill try to help.
Or if any of you are already using these please also provide any input you can.
