Have you ever had this experience? You wake up after a late night out and you want to play some games. The problem is that you just don't have the mental fortitude for serious thought. Whether it's the stealth parts in The Last of Us, dodging the cops in Watch Dogs, or leading your shots in Killzone, it's all too much for this too-bright morning.
If you get where I'm coming from, let me introduce you to Knack.
In all seriousness, I never expected to finish this game. It's a little too cutesy, there's not much variety in the gameplay, and something about the story is just wrong. However, due to a recent upshot in the number of happy hours in my life, I found myself gravitating to this game more and more.
Knack is a brawler, pure and simple. He moves from location to location, beating the crap out of everything between him and the next place he wants to go. Whether it's robots, security guards, goblins, wildlife, or rocks, he pummels it. That's it. That's the whole game. It requires minimal thought and that is its blessing.
What's that, you say? Some of the fights are actually tough and would prove difficult for those at the tender mercies of alcohol detoxification? Well, my friend, I say to you that that is what Knack's crystal superpowers are for! Through some clever level design, Knack's toughest fights are just before he comes across a large number of relics to drastically increase his size. Every level, guaranteed. Save up your crystals for those rooms, soften up the enemies with a crystal blast, and you'll breeze right through.
The greatest thing about playing Knack hungover is that the pain in your brain will allow you to gloss over the more disturbing parts of its story. You won't think it's weird that Knack is treated like a servant or worse some Star Trek red shirt by his human companions. "Knack, open up that gate!", "Clear the way, Knack!", and "Knack, get us some room to work!" give you an idea of what he hears from his so-called friends. You won't be disturbed that the humans drove the goblins out of the grasslands and into the wilderness and mountains, but are then shocked and outraged when the goblins fight back. No, you'll definitely want to play this game with a hangover. Otherwise, you might start to think that Knack just might be on the wrong side of this whole conflict.
So, if, like me, you got Knack in your ps4 bundle, or you picked it up in a bargain bin, or you download it when it undoubtedly becomes the first AAA game offered for free in the PS+ package, consider my words carefully. This is a game that can be very, very enjoyable under the right conditions.
