PS4 to cost $399!

I am not shocked that this is the price of the PS4. The price of gaming is disgusting these days. From the games to the accessories, everything is extortionate in price, and in an economy where not many have much money, it is hardly fair or good for business. That is why so many people pirate games or emulate game consoles with their laptops and computers. I, for one, have not paid for a game in years. I always wait until someone rips it and released it so that I can download it online. works for me :)

I think it's a fair price. The ps3 when it was released was way overpriced, but I honestly think that $399 is a fair price. I can't wait for the release I'll be one of the schmuks waiting in line to purchase it.

Right--the price is pretty significant in relation to the Xbox 360, but also compared to the release price of the PS3. I still remember when it came out, thinking how ridiculously overpriced it was. Now that I have one I know that it definitely wasn't worth the price at the time (not that it's a bad console by any means), and the same goes for the PS4 as far as I'm concerned.

Here in Australia, the PS4 is only $50 cheaper then the Xbox One. PS4 is $549 whereas the Xbox One is $599

The price for the PS4 has not been very well received in Europe or the UK where I am based.
The reason being is the huge difference in US price to here, Yes $399 is a good price but in the UK that should be £249 not £349 Sony quoted, also EU are expected to pay 399 euros which is £380 or $531 a huge mark up compared with the US price.
I mean come on we understand a slight price difference but this is ridiculous.

Yeah it's really annoying what's going on! They sale cheap in the United States and ask an insane price for European costumers. That's how they manage to keep up the 399$ price in the US, because if they would ask a the same price for all continents, the price would be somewhere around 499$. Sure, they can say stuff like, additional taxes and bla bla, but at the end it's just the company that tries to take advantage of a stronger economy.

Yeah but you're gonna have people in America who're gonna be complaining about the $399 price tag. Particularly folks who are working moms and dads, and just don't have that kind of money to throw away willy nilly.

Yes, yes, yes, yes and YESSSS! I'm so excited that it's $400. That's quite a bit of money, but honestly, it could've been worse. Someone like me in the position I'm in, it's not the easiest coming up with that money. I'm definitely saving though. I'm so excited for it to come out! I can't wait. It being $400 put a huge smile on my face though. I was honestly 100% expecting a $500-550 console. Even upwards of $600 if they were being bold enough to say "Yeah, we're over the Xbox One because we know you'll choose us."

In my place, I think it would be much much higher. Maybe it would reach $600. This is because of all the import duties and tariffs that would be required to be paid before it is released to the retailers. But I think that the Xbox One would be even much more costly which is why I think more people would purchase the PS4.

Really glad that Sony went ahead with a nice low price for the PS4. I was worried that they would match Microsoft on with the $499 price. After they announced the price it pretty much sealed deal that I will be purchasing the PS4 either at launch or not that soon after. It's amazing how Sony has made all the right moves for this upcoming generation. If they keep this up, there is no doubt in my mind that they will win this next console generation.

We are lucky to have this price! It's not cheap, but we've seen worse!
I've always been on the side of Playstation, and it is not now that I will change.

The main advantage for the price is that the Playstation Eyes is not sold with the PS4. The Xbox One requires the purchase of Kinect.

Hopefully Sony will continue in this track.;)

Nice to see a fellow Aussie here :),
Hmm,how many are on the forum I wonder?

Anyway, yeah..$548 is pretty darn good and cheaper than any console before it even taking into account time period and inflation.
Remember how much the PS3,PS2 and even PS1 were at the time? All more that the PS4,even at that time.

So really we are pretty lucky the new console(s) are cheaper at launch then they have ever been.

A fairly interesting price, cheaper than the Xbox One but more expensive than the Wii U which puts it in the middle of the 8th generation, I think that the price is pretty decent really, what I would like to see though is a reduced price on digital games. It doesn't really matter how much you spend on the console at launch , it can all even itself out in the years after its release.

The price-point isn't super cheap, but for a brand new console just on the market, it's certainly reasonable, and a whole 100 bucks cheaper than the XBone. Sony's really hitting all the right spots lately, that's for sure.

If you recall from the E3 conference when the PS3 was originally announced it was first priced at 600 dollars which cause d an awkward silence in the crowd so Sony have definintely learned their lesson and have charged the ps3 more reasonably, however PSN will no longer be free so that price differnet won't be that great in the long run.

however PSN will no longer be free.
Sure it is..but 'Free to Play' MP games will be up to the publisher whether you need PSN+ or not.
I think you mean we need Playstation Plus if we wanna play 'most' games online.
But dont forget Sony have had PS+ for ages as an option for PS3,so it not just for MP online gaming, you also get free stuff and discounts (at least I imagine that will continue)

This is actually quite interesting, seeing as I remember the Xbox 360 first releasing with a price of around $399, while the PS3 released with a price of around $499-$599. It did not put a dent in its popularity at all, especially since it sold over 30 million copies in Europe alone. The tables have clearly turned now with the $399 being the release price for the PS4, while the Xbox seems to be trudging behind with $499, which only strains more favor into the PS4 this time around. You could already tell Microsoft started sweating once the prices were released, as everyone is much more savvy when it comes to prices in this day and age.

Forget the matter of the price range between the two systems, perhaps Sony is just a better brand?
