Sony still winning console war with 4.2 million PS4 consoles sold

Not that any of you were worried, but it's pretty clear that Sony is continuing to win the console wars with their announcement of having sold 4.2 million units since launch. This come not long after Microsoft's announcement that they have reached the 3 million units sold since launch. With their launch dates only a week apart, it seems obvious that the overall winner at this point in the game is Sony. In addition, PS4s continue to be a hot commodity, whereas Xbox Ones are now in stock most places and readily available.

IGN has this great article that breaks down what exactly all of these numbers mean.

4.2 million PlayStation 4s have been sold worldwide since the console launch on November 15 to December 28 - around six weeks. The console hasn’t launched in Japan yet, either. But since Sony is still selling PS4s as fast as it can make them, the sales figure would essentially be 4.2 million even if the console was available globally. PS4s are still out of stock at most retailers - until supply catches up with demand, it’s hard to gauge how high global demand for the console truly is.

3 million Xbox Ones have been sold from its launch on November 22 through December 31, a period of about 5.5 weeks. Like the PS4, The Xbox One isn’t yet available in Japan, and in 2013 Microsoft also sold virtually every console as fast as it could make them. But unlike the PS4, Xbox Ones are now in stock on Amazon, GameStop, and various other retailers - it appears that supply has caught up with launch demand, and in the coming months we should get a clear look at true Xbox One demand.

Like the article suggests though, it would be interesting to go back to these figures in 6 months time.

Shame we can't say see how many have switched from Xbox 360 to PS4 and vice versa.

I'm not surprised when I think about it, but I don't really see a reason to buy either of them now. They'll get cheaper as time goes on, and I don't really see games that I'm dying to play on the PS4 or XB1.

Pretty crazy that the PS4 has done more in 6 weeks than the Wii U has done in almost a year. Someone must be in trouble at Nintendo.

Of course the price will go down, but I bet it will be at least 2 years before that happens. I had the same midset until I saw COD ghost on PS3 and PS4 next to each other. Its a really big difference.

As for Nintendo, when they release a new Zelda, the Wii will probably sell another 2 million in a week.

Anyway, it's fun to see the Wii U surpassing the X1... but then you remember that it's the TOTAL sales, so it's doing pretty bad in comparison.

I'm glad that Playstation is doing so great this generation. It even outsold Nintendo's Wii U, which went on sale a year earlier. This shows that gamers want to play games on consoles and not to use it as a cable box. What's even more impressive is that the PS4 launched in less countries initially.

Well fanboys need something to fight about. Slapfighting over a game not being 1080p or 60fps wore out quickly. So move on to sales I suppose.

I didn't even think there was anything to debate about in that respect other than whose series has more brown and gray with the blackest of black.

On another forum which is pretty much defunct now, I remember there was a thread 50+ pages of debate on which series is better, with added insults and fornicating with family members if you disagreed with their opinion

The had won it before release IMO. Microsoft got a huge amount of bad press. Even after they removed their DRM and everything.

Agreed... May sound completely obvious but the price of the consoles was always going to be a main factor

Price is typically the clincher. While polls in the lead up showed that people were going to pick PS4 over X1 by a large amount, it actually turns out it's like a million-plus.

Yes, go Sony! Glad the Xbox is getting it's a** handed to it! Nice to see that Sony is where it deserves to be and it's cool they actually make a profit on these consoles, not just the games.

I used to hate when this happened when I first started getting into forums in general. Now I get kind of disappointed when a simple discussion about preference doesn't spill into unreasonable fanboy malice.

Even though Xbox one was released earlier than PS4 on our country it still has less sales, because a lot of people already own an Xbox and they wanted to try out a new console.
