Stories in videogames

Can not say I agree with all the choices above needing a decent story. I would say Racing, Fighting, and Platformers are just fine and dandy without a realy deep narrative; maybe it is just me but I would rather there be no story in a game then a craptastic one that just clogs and soaks up all the fun.

I don't think I would play a game without a story. Even Super Mario Bros had a story and it was THE game that made me love the virtual world so much. I literally spent my whole childhood on Super Mario bros 1 through 3 and I wish I had an ol' Nintendo. Video games to me are like interactive movies that you control with your own will. Not having a director do all the controlling for you. I love video games!

It depends on the game. Racing games and sports games don't need them. But I play a lot of RPGs and I expect a great story. The Witcher 2, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, The Walking Dead, it's games with great stories that stick out in our minds. Personally I'll always choose the game with a great story and good gameplay over a game with great gameplay but no story.

I'm a sucker for a great story. A great story can save a game from a lot of things. Look at Beyond: Two Souls, I for one really love that game but what saves it is it's story. The gameplay isn't the best in the world. and the graphics are beautiful. The story can frustrate you at times but it's good enough that I still finished the game having enjoyed the experience.
