Turning Off External Hard Drive

I was wondering because up to this point I've just been going into the settings and disconnecting the external hard drive I have connected to my PS5, I've been doing this ever since I got the hard drive. What I do is before I turn off the PS5 is I go into the Storage settings and I disconnect the hard drive that way and when the PS5 tells me it's been disconnected then I shut it off. Can you just turn the PS5 off normally without messing up the external hard drive or is it best to go into the storage settings disconnect the hard drive and then turn the console off?

Unlike a PC, you do not have to do this all the time. I've had an external on mine since day one. I just power off and on whenever I like... I keep the drive connected via the back USB. This does not slow down anything at all and I have never had a problem.
