USB Flash Drives

Does anyone use USB flash drives for backing up files? I'm not sure how reliable they are. My thinking is that they are best used as a way to transfer files. For backing up files, wouldn't a CD be a more stable format?

I don't use them to store files or back-up files. I only use them as you said - to transfer files from one computer to another. I do a lot of work at home - save it to flash drive - take it to work and transfer. I would use a CD to back-up.

I have a removable hard drive that I used to back up movies and songs and use my USB to backup (very) personal letters. Depending on the amount of stuff you want to back up I think a USB would be okay. You could just put it in a drawer somewhere. I'd check to see how long they're supposed to be good for first.

You know after I said I back up on CD I thought no I don't. Do you remember the old floppy discs? I had a lot of them and I had a lot of things stored on them. You can't use them anymore. I learned my lesson - I use a removable hard drive too.

USB flash drives are an excellent way of carrying and transferring information. They are very small, rendering them very portable. They can easily fit into a pocket. Flash drives are very reliable as well. I do not think a CD is more stable, as they have the potential of getting scratched. USB drives are very durable, and can really only fail if smashed or if exposed to water. I'd recommend using them.

Hard drives for backing up files. I don't see many people saying their hard drives fried. Flash drives are good for copying/pasting from one computer to another.

Agreed. I have a USB flash drive because I am a Windows user. Windows as you know, can go wonky at any time. Sometimes a weird glitch can force you to have to do a clean reinstall. So my USB goes to work, backs up my files. I reinstall, and then upload the files to the new installation. And I'm back in business.

Ahh man you are so wrong.I would rather backup my files on cartridge from Nintendo or on old music tape that commodore c64 used than to use any type of disks. They are not reliable at all. They are worst material that i ever seen.

Using any kind of chip is the best way to save data(Hard drive,SSD,USB flash,SD card,Mini SD..... and even cartridge )

I agree with Igor about USB drives.Just be careful to chose quality hardware and there is no problem with data at all!
