Which is more powerful - the PS3 or the Xbox 360?

I have long believed that the PS3 is more powerful than the Xbox 360. I thought that the PS3 is able to churn more beautiful graphics and a faster frame rate as compared to the 360. However, as I read some reviews from different video game sites, I mostly see that the Xbox 360 version of a game has better ratings as compared to the PS3 version. Why is this the case? Is the Xbox 360 the more powerful machine after all?

The 360 is not as powerful as the PS3. I just don't think the PS3 has been used right.

Like for example the PS2 game called Black. If you looked at that game and compared it to some newer fps. It could actually stand toe to toe from a graphics stand point. The PS3 just like the PS2 needs to be used correctly to get its full potential.

I agree that the PS3 is more powerful, I haven't checked recently but I remember when both first consoles were about to be released, comparing the specifications and noting that PS3 came out on top. I am not sure about longevity though, my PS3 stopped reading games in the fist year, and with a warranty that only just ran out. I guess bad luck accounts for a lot here too!

I reckon that either systems are powerful. They both contradict each other's powers, and it seems to be an everlasting war between the two.

PS3 is. Free PSN network, and more games that has better titles.
Simply better than xbox.

The best thing about the playstation is the blu-ray and free playstation network. the console performances are about the same, not worth comparing.

I would say the PS3, but the problem is the damn cell architecture, no one knows how to use it correctly, and i don't blame them, Sony pulled a stupid move with it and doesn't bother explaining how things work correctly!

Lol. So, the PS3 is more powerful in paper but when it comes to implementation, the Xbox 360 wins because it's a lot easier to grasp the architecture of the Xbox? So that explains why the PS3 games look identical or even look less stellar than their Xbox counterparts. So it's not enough to have a strong hardware. You also need to make it accessible to game developers.

I feel that the PS3 is more powerful because it uses a Blu-ray player and the Xbox 360 doesn't. The ps3 also had a web browser before the 360 did.

I mean it has other Great features such as Free Online Play, PSN, BluRay Player and the ability to play games in 3D - But I don't see these aspects being marketed - Heck a lot of people still don't know that you can use your PS3 to play 3D Movies if you have a compatible 3D TV.

I actually didn't know this. Not that I would want to do it, even if I did though, I'm not particularly fond of 3D movies anyway and 3D TV sets cost too much too.

As for PS4 being more powerful, I think after the Xbox reveal this has been confirmed, and the PS4's specs do sound nice. I have read that the PS4 is going to be about 16x more powerful than the PS3 so that's a lot to compete with, although I'm not really that sure whether I read that correctly.
