Did your PS2 scratch discs?

I have the slim version of the PS2. I've had it for a very long time and it's still working up to this day. My only gripe is that there are some discs that my console has scratched this rendering them defective. I know it's a bit too late to ask about this but what could have been the problem?

I think discs were usually scratched if the PS2 was moved why a disc was being read (jostling the disc around a bit) OR if it was sitting upright sometimes. Sitting it flat shouldn't cause disc scratch issues.

I had the fat PS2, so I never experienced my discs being scratched. However, I've also noticed that the disc stops reading if the disc's plastic hub gets damaged. In fact, a couple of my games have functioned erratically or otherwise stopped since the plastic hub broke. The problem is worse if the disc is a pirated version of the game.

My fat PS2 never scratched my discs, if I recall correctly, and my friend had a slim one and I don't remember hearing about it scratching discs either. Some of my overused games eventually became unusable but I think that may have been more due to me not putting the discs back in the case immediately after playing as I usually just leave them lying around for days until I use them again.

Nope. Once though my grandmother tripped on the controller's wire and my PS2 fell into the floor with a newly bought GTA Vice City inside. The console survived but GTA Vice City got scratched.

From that point on I could only play around 20 minutes of game before it slowed down to a crawl and eventually froze.

My fat PS2 scratched a disc. I think the only reason it did was because I tried to fix a disc read error and adjusted the laser height a wee bit too much. Disc still plays though so its not a big deal.

I don't know if it was my console or not, but I do remember a lot of CD's having scratched disks. I even remember handing them quite carefully, but somehow those disks were always able to get a few scratches. I have played games then looked at the CD and found it in good shape though, so it was probably just me sucking at keeping a CD in tact >.<

Question: Did you loan anyone games? Discs are awesome for the amount of data they can hold for a game, but they are the absolute worst to loan to anyone. It's not saying that they'll come back scratched each time, but you have 80% chance.

Loaning is a death sentence for discs.

I wanted to say "Not really" but I couldn't put my heart into it. Don't lend anything you don't want coming back with scratches, burns, or syrup on the bottom.

You've gotten the syrup/grease on the bottom of your discs as well?

Yep, I agree with not loaning if you want to see your disks again and in one piece. I made that mistake one too many times and it will not happen again.

I think we loaned one or two, but 99% of them never left our house as we didn't really have anyone who wanted them anyways.

My PlayStation 2 slim also scratched disks slightly over time, but there were always playable. I never understood why because there was nothing touching the bottom of the disk when it is in the console. As long as the games are still playable I could care less to be honest.

My PS 2 scratched a lot of my discs and made them unplayable, so I chipped it and starting buying the cheap game because my PS 2 would destroy a game in about two weeks of constant playing. At the time the games were expensive and I was doing chores to make the money so it was impossible for me to keep up with the rate that my PS 2 would scratch the discs.

i had that problem with my ps2 as well. but i never had problems with disc scratching with my first ps2 which was fat but yeah i did realise some of my games were being scratched with my ps2 slim.

I have the fatty and I can't say that scratching has been a problem with the console. the problem for me is the scratching occurs when I loan the games out.

I can't say that I ever noticed by PS2 scratching discs to be honest… Then again, I know I did have a few lightly scratched discs but they still played more or less perfectly. Tomb Raider 2's title screen did go slightly glitchy but the game was still fine. I put that down to it being more or less constantly in use though…!

I don't recall having loaned any of my Playstation games to anyone. The last time I lent a game out was back in the days of the Sega Megadrive – and I never got it back. It ended up being loaned out at least twice more after I borrowed it to a friend and, well, that was it. Gone…

I've never had any issues with that. I don't really run my consoles for too long because of the risks anyway.
