How did you feel about the ending of The Last of Us?

How did you feel about the ending where you “selfishly” decided to save Ellie at the expense of a possible cure? Honestly, I felt conflicted. On the one hand Ellie really grew on me, but on the other having seen lvl 1 Infected sobbing and injured Infected fused to the walls… I mean. A cure would really be something to get cracking on. That said within the story I can see why they wouldn’t play it that way and I can honestly agree with it. Still… couldn’t they have taken a brain biopsy? Or done a spinal tap? Did they really need to remove her entire brain? Ah, well – it’s much more dramatic this way and changing it wouldn’t really help this story I guess.

I didn't feel any remorse over it, personally. The fireflies were a messed up bunch anyway, they couldn't even hold themselves together, so they had to lie to a bunch of smugglers to do something they should have done themselves, if at all (they also still cheated him out of those guns, likely). Also, just because Ellie was immune due to a mutation doesn't in any way suggest the same mutation in anyone else. More to the point, Joel is a survivor, and looking out for number 1 and anyone you care about comes above all else. Over the course of the game, I think Ellie learned that too, especially during her solo adventures. Hence why they both accepted it and moved on. I don't think of it as a lie since both people are really in on it.

It's an acknowledged lie, but the fact it needed to be made says something all on it's own. That said I can see why you would feel any remorse, but the rescue mission would have failed if that one lady hadn't let us in in the first place. So there is some decency there just like in Joel... it's just being overrun by the need to survive and such. Also they were looking to see what the mutation was and whether it could be synthesized for everyone. The big problem of course being that there really isn't an infrastructure to do that at the level needed to really help everybody.

I mean, would they really able to do anything if they had the cure? Wouldn't they just end up keep them to themselves, possible starting wars between themselves for the power to keep it? I think the lie Joel said was justified and also, let's us have a possible sequel, so anything that let's The Last of Us 2 happen is a good thing in my book.

I always thought who is to say they would even find a cure by removing her brain? Sure there is a possibility but there were no guarantees. For a man who lost his daughter at the start of the game, and came to think of Ellie as a part of his family I can completely understand why Joel wouldn't want to just sacrifice her for a chance. Though I do not agree that he lied to her about it. I think he should have been honest because it's going to come back to haunt him later. Then again, the story wouldn't be as good without a little bit of added drama to it. Granted I know she probably senses he was lying to her, there is just a trust factor. She may know he's lying but want him to tell the truth. Throughout the game they developed a form of trust, and even if it's a lie both people are aware is a lie, it's still a lie and I think they may just be burying something they need to talk about so they can keep a trust between the two of them. In the end, if Ellie really wanted to sacrifice herself for a chance to find a cure that was her business. Granted she went about it in the wrong way.

At the end of this series I can almost see her doing just that despite what Joel or anyone else has to say about it. I just think Joel would need closure knowing it is what she wanted and at least have a chance to say goodbye to her. Which is the real reason I think he stopped it from happening and why he lied to her...he's trying to protect himself from the hurt of losing someone he cares about again. Hopefully not, hopefully they can find some other alternative or a group of people who really can get a cure from her just using her blood or a sample of her brain tissue or something. The only real conflict I have about it is if it was something she wanted to be done or if the fireflies were just telling Joel that thinking he would rest easier. I guess we will find out in the next game the truth behind that ordeal though.

loved the game, didnt like the ending.
Made it hugely open for sequels though as expected.

I think its quite good you get attached to ellie well as a character even though the cure is missed oh well it was a good overall game though so it doesn't matter.

I think that a cure isn't necessary. The proof is the little township that is created by Joel's brother, Tommy; they were able to get the hydro power plant to work! And let's face it, the biggest threat in their world is not the infected, but the humans. And as mentioned already by BlackSolaris, more conflict would arrive when one group of people control the cure, ultimately holding the power.

I also think that the ending couldn't be more perfect and that it closes rather well. It ends the Joel and Ellie's story. If they do decide to create another Last of Us game, I hope that they tell a whole new story with different people, or go into history of the other characters.
