I generally take all reviews with a pinch of salt. As I've said in the recent past, reviewers to magazines or even online videos are simply people like you and me. Dare I say this but sometimes they may have hidden perks which may rate a game better than it ought to be and vise-versa, companies may not have responded well to a previous review they've done and the reviewer will, in future, hold a grudge to mark decent games from that particular company lower. Obviously I have no evidence to prove this, but you can see it happening and I can think of a raft of games from the first half of the last decade (and a few at the back end) which had views close to the opposite of my own – whether it be negative or positive.
As a result, I can probably count on one hand the amount of Playstation Magazines and online reviews from such sources for a decade now. These days, I take each game on it's own merits. I'll look at the pictures and perhaps resort to seeing varying lengths of it on YouTube (from independent walkthrough gamers – some I've listed in the past) to judge it for myself before taking it further with regards to a purchase if necessary. I've done this for several years and so far, I've not set a foot wrong. I've saved myself a small fortune.
After saying all of this though, I must say that I think reviews of Destiny have been pretty fair, judged from what I've watched of the game. Obviously without a PS4, I can't comment on how it actually feels to play. I can only cast judgement from the campaign walkthrough I've watched. I'm about an hour from the end of it now and unless there's a massive upturn in events in what I've got left to see, I must honestly say it leaves me feeling almost completely cold. I know I've moaned on about how much my eyes glaze over at just about FPS title (simply because of the vast over-saturation of them on the market over the last six or seven years), but I can honestly say there's near enough nothing in the game, campaign wise, that wants me to buy it. I find it very repetitive and the system of levelling up, perks you get e.t.c. way too complicated. I still don't understand what's supposed to be going on, who's who or anything like that.
Positives? It has an excellent soundtrack without doubt and some of the weapons also sound impressive. Other than that, well…I have to shrug my shoulders. To me, it's just a generic FPS game that has a 'travelling through space' theme. You enter an arena, shoot everything until it's all gone. Transport yourself to another with a different backdrop and repeat the same process (many times over)...
I know this game does have it's fans and if those people enjoy it – that's all that matters. I'm sure there's plenty of people out there who wouldn't enjoy some games that I play. For instance, I quite enjoyed Resident Evil Survivor (the first person one) – a title that's unanimously loathed!
However in my eyes, 6/10 really is a fair score for Destiny when you average everything out.
I just don't 'get it' – sorry!
