When Did Playstation 1 really fade?

Playstation 1 is now ancient in many people's eyes, but when did the system really fade out. I still think the system was in play around the release of the PS2 in 2000. I think that the system became old around 2004, 2005. I think they stopped making games for the system at that time.

That's an interesting question, I think you are about right with the dates there though. I really hope that PS3 doesn't die down soon though just because of PS4 being released. I think the fading date for PS3 will be not for another few years though, and only when PS4 is reduced in price to a reasonable amount will they perhaps stop making games for it.

I would have to say 2001, one year after the release of PS2. The graphical leap was too much for most of people, so everyone just moved on to the PS2, which i don't think it's going to happen with the PS3 because the PS4 is not that good at the moment.

It faded when the Dreamcast came out. That was the time when the games being developed for the console started to dwindle. Then, it completely died when the PlayStation 2 came out since the PS 2 had backwards compatibility and all. However, the PS 1 would always love in the hearts of every gamer who played a PS 1 game.

I don't think the Dreamcast had much impact on the PS1 personally, it seemed to fall by the wayside compared to PS1 and never really got to be all that popular, I could be wrong though but that's my take on it.

I agree with BlackSolaris, I think the leap from PS1 to PS2 was so massive that the PS2 probably single-handedly killed the PS1 (according to plan, of course).


The PS2 was really a game changer, since I think it's one of the only few consoles that both gamers and developers really praised to that extent, and thus why so many games were made for it.

Good feedback guys. I think that what happened to Playstation 1 has happened to PS2 and will eventually happen to the PS3 when the new PS4 comes out. The new shiny toy will always become more popular than the old toy, no matter how good the old toy is.

Strangely enough, I don't think the PS1 really faded away. I think it sort of "evolved" once the PS2 came out, but I don't deny that it dwindled in popularity over the years. I've always gotten consoles late into their life span, so I'm not as aware of these things as others may be. Still, even though the PS4 is about to come out, the PS1 doesn't really seem like an old console to me.

RaggaJungle, -- Actually, Sony said they were not planning on having the PS4 replace the PS3, but simply become an added member of the PS family alongside the PS3 and the PS Vita. Which seems to suggest that it's going to take longer to fade into the back.

The PS2 was and still is the best selling console to date, and although that may not have killed the PS1 on release, I feel fairly certain that as soon as the PS2 started picking up, the PS1 just got dropped as the less popular younger brother. It's a shame though since so many great games were still on the PS1, but if I recall correctly, the PS2 also had backwards compatibility (At least on the early models) and that probably had to do with the disappearance of the PS1. Not to mention that the GameCube and the XBox also came out with the PS2 which were both great consoles on their own!
